The South African Research Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture (Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at University of Johannesburg) is seeking to appoint one or more postdoctoral research fellows for a period of between one and three years. A successful applicant will take up a fellowship as soon as possible and by no later than the beginning of 2026.

Envisaged research should focus on South African topics (or topics pertinent to South Africa) that fall broadly within at least one of the following three rubrics: Gender and Visual Culture / Public Art and Curating / Art and Design in the Context of Community Projects.

Fellows appointed as grantholder-linked National Research Foundation (NRF) postdoctoral fellows will be paid a non-taxable allowance of R 320 000 per annum and R 50 000 for conference attendance, conference costs, fieldwork and other research costs.
